This experiment was officially abandoned in 1953, six years after it started. Structurally, it is similar to LSD and is often used as a benchmark hallucinogen when comparing psychedelics. Mescaline is a substituted phenethylamine, a molecule based on the basic phenethylamine structure. Along with MDMA, 2C-B, and others, this sets it apart from the tryptamine class of psychedelics, which includes psilocybin, LSD, and DMT.
Soul retrieval is an ancient practice that shamans use in order to bring an individual who is suffering from soul loss back to wholeness. In order to understand how it works – and whether you need it – it’s necessary to first understand what triggers soul loss, what the symptoms are, and how to heal this energetic fragmentation of the Self. Soul loss occurs when a traumatic event causes the energy to fragment, whereby parts of the soul flee for safety and end up trapped in the locale of the trauma or lost, and adrift in the world. There is active medical research into the peptides found in the skin secretions of Phyllomedusa bicolor, focusing on discovering their biological effects. There have been some preclinical trials in mice and rats, but no phase-1 tests or clinical trials of safety in humans, as of November 2019.

Working With The Medicine In The Day
Participants are often encouraged to take time for reflection and integration following the ceremony, as the effects of the medicine can continue to be felt for some time afterward. Once the intention has been set, the rapeh is prepared and administered by the practitioner or shaman. Participants will take turns receiving the medicine, which is blown into the nostrils using a pipe or straw. The practitioner may also use other tools, such as smudging, feathers, or crystals, to help clear and balance the energy of the individual receiving the medicine. That said, if you trust the person serving you, the experience is powerful and oftentimes transformational, even if the transformations are subtle rather than immediately pronounced.
Many individuals who have integrated microdosing mescaline into their weekly routine report higher levels of creativity, more energy, increased focus, and improved relational skills, as well as reduced anxiety, stress, and even depression. Some enthusiasts also report that microdosing mescaline has helped them heighten their spiritual awareness and enhance their senses. A 2005 study into the ceremonial use of peyote among Native American populations found there to be no detrimental long-term effects.
Beyond cognitive effects, imperceptible doses of mescaline have also been shown to act as anti-inflammatory agents. Some people have also found mescaline microdosing useful for treating the symptoms or even the underlying causes of depression, including experiencing a sense of peace and calm without the “numbness” of conventional antidepressant medications.
First and foremost, you want to feel safe at the center that you choose, both physically and emotionally/energetically. If you can’t relax because you feel on edge, you won’t be able to open to the medicine’s healing qualities. Because this plant medicine doesn’t distort our senses as intensely, or so we trick ourselves into believing, as Ayahuasca, Kambo, San Pedro, Iboga, Mushrooms, or other Medicines, many dismiss the power of rapeh. After administering the medicine to all participants, the ceremony will typically close with a final prayer or chant.
Similarly, arginine butyrate in combination with ganciclovir was administered to 15 patients with refractory EBV+ lymphoid malignancies of B-cell or NK/T-cell origin. Ganciclovir was administered twice daily at standard doses, and arginine butyrate was administered by continuous infusion in an intrapatient dose escalation, from 500 mg/kg per day to 2000 mg/kg per day, as tolerated, for a 21-day cycle. Ten of 15 patients showed significant antitumor responses, with 4 complete responders and 6 partial responder within 1 treatment cycle. Among the complete responders, 1 patient had extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, and 1 patient had peripheral T-cell lymphoma. Among the partial responders, 1 patient had extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, and 1 patient had a subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma. The combination of arginine butyrate and ganciclovir was felt to be reasonably well tolerated, with biologic activity in vivo.27 However, at present, the drug is not available for clinical use.
Although part of an eons-old tradition of medicinal use, it appears to be a relatively new preparation of peyote cactus for sale in Mexico. Customs and Border Protection issued a reminder of its Schedule I status. Because it’s an endangered species, growing peyote at home—whether from cuttings or peyote cactus seeds—could help to save it from extinction.
